BURNING ALTERNATIVES
To eliminate the chance of a fire spreading, to reduce pollutants from the air, or if healh reasons prevent you from burning, here are other ways to dispose of yard waste: Chipping, Composting-Mulching, Curbside Pickup, Greenwaste Facility (many landfills have reduced rates for greenwaste).

Know the Forest Laws and Local Ordinances Before Burning
Forest Fire Hazard Seasons KRS 149.400
- Spring Forest Fire Hazard Season: Feb. 15 - April 30
- Fall Forest Fire Hazard Season: Oct. 1 - Dec. 15
- During fire seasons, it is illegal to burn anything within 150 feet of any woodland or brushland between the hours of 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Open Burning Regulation 401 KAR 63:005
Open burning regulations are enforced by the Division for Air Quality. It is illegal to burn garbage or any other materials, except natural plant matter, such as brush and woody debris. Visit the Division for Air Quality Web site for more information.
Local Ordinances
Before conducting any outdoor burning, citizens should check with their local fire department and county government to find out about restrictions and local ordinances.
If You Must Burn Follow these Fire Safety Tips
- Contact your local fire department or Kentucky Department of Forestry office.
- Beware of power lines, trees and structures.
- Clear all flammable materials, such as dry leaves and dry grass, from around the fire.
- Have water and hand tools, such as a shovel and/or rake, available.
- Have communication available or have someone nearby who can call for help in case of an emergency.
- Burn when the humidity is high and the wind is calm.
- During fire seasons, it is illegal to burn anything within 150 feet of any woodland or brushland between the hours of 6 am to 6 pm.
- Stay with the fire until it is completely out.
